What is involved with Jan-Hendrik taking Chuck's melodies and creating professional compositions?
First, Jan-Hendrik has to clean up the form and structure of each individual song, i.e. rhythms and pitches of the drafts I have provided him. Next, he must conceptualize a 'sound concept' that works with each song individually as well as the the broader structure of the musical (basically making sure that all the songs fit together stylistically even though they are in themselves quite different). Then he must compose harmonic texture to the songs in the style decided upon, and arrange it for the specific instruments. Finally, he creates source material for either a) recording purposes (in this case for his musicians to play from during recording) or b) production purposes (creating the recordings for the production)
The process can be compared to a client hiring an architect to build a house. The client has the vision, the architect has to realize that vision into a functioning building. The client can do the work himself, but the time and effort spent to achieve this outweighs the money spent hiring a professional. Bottom line: experience and knowledge saves time, and therefore saves money.
