Jan-Hendrik Harley Biography
Jan-Hendrik Harley graduated from the University of Stellenbosch (BMUS) in 2002, majoring in ensemble music, classical guitar and viola. He’s a composer/arranger of classical and popular music, and freelances as a performing and recording artist. He has also done production work on commercial as well as classical albums, focusing mainly on orchestration and scoring. In 2013 Jan-Hendrik obtained a Masters degree in chamber music (with composition portfolio) also from Stellenbosch, and graduated with a second Masters degree in Music performance (with early music as related field) from the University of North Texas in August 2015.
For more than a decade now Jan-Hendrik has done compositions and arrangements for live performances, most notably the incidental music for the plays 'Mort' and 'Wyrd Sisters' (Terry Prattchet, Stephen Briggs) in 2003, 2004; arrangements of traditional choir music for the Namibian National Orchestra in 2006; an orchestral reduction of Die Fledermaus (Johann Strauss jr.) in 2007; a Miriam Makeba medley for the National Youth Jazz Band, performed at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, as well as the Spier Summer Festival Pops concert arrangements in 2009. Since 2010 Jan-Hendrik has scored four feature length and two short films, including the South African independent film 'I Now Pronounce You Black And White' and 'Copposites', which both enjoyed Nationwide cinematic release.
As an experienced orchestral player and chamber musician Jan-Hendrik aims to deliver a product that not only pleases the audience, but strikes a balance between maximum playability and enjoyment for the orchestra or ensemble as well. Jan-Hendrik takes care to deliver well refined and working instrumental parts, to make best use of the rehearsal time available when working with a larger group of musicians.
